The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) had a committee meeting discussed several topics on the clinical and scientific advances and how they affect common care and treatment of pregnant individuals during the prenatal and laboring period.

Did you hear the news? ACOG stated "evidence suggests that, in addition to regular nursing care, continuous one-to-one emotional support is associated with improved outcomes for women in labor." Continuous support from a doula was shown to have positive affects on the laboring individual including shortened labor, higher APGAR scores and improving the rate of of spontaneous labor.

The Cochrane study even went on to suggest that hiring a doula would be more cost effective than the possible use of medical interventions and cesarean section. The use of a trained support personnel, childbirth education and alternative coping methods were even encouraged to become a more integral part of the labor and delivery process.
